Kim was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1933. She started off as a fashion model, and was actually the spokesmodel for a fridge company called "Miss Deepfreeze". I thought that was cute. She then moved to Los Angeles where she got her start in film. Kim won a golden globe for her performance in "Picnic" in 1955, and in 1958 starred in her most famous role: Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo". Kim is not only an actress, she's also an artist. She paints, sculpts, writes poetry, and practices photography :)

Vintage Wave Iron

I love styling my hair in pincurls or fingerwaves. I've practiced doing them long enough that I finally have decent results. However, when I found this vintage waving iron I couldn't resist! I believe it's from the 1920's or 1930's. Considering it takes me well over an hour to set my hair in pincurls (I'm accurate but not fast!) this iron looks like it would be a breeze! I read that these used to be heated up over a fire, but I may try it with just setting lotion at first. This way I can avoid any rookie mistakes, like burning my hair. Wish me luck!

Long Sleeve Vintage Blouses

I've been busy doing a lot of shopping lately, and I just got the most gorgeous vintage blouse. It's got long billowy sleeves, a shirt style collar, and pretty rhinestone buttons. I don't have a photo of it yet, but it's almost a combination of the blouses posted above. The first photo is from the 1930's, next is 1940's, and the last photo is 1950's. My blouse is from the 50's, but it has big sheer sleeves like the 1930's picture. Now I need a nice vintage skirt to go with it! After all, you can never have too many vintage blouses & skirts :)

Ida Lupino was born in London, England in 1918. She was born into a show business family, and got her first film role in 1931. Ida is best known for her tough girl roles in 1940's movies, and not only did she act but she directed! Ida was the first woman to direct a film noir with "The Hitch-Hiker". She also kept busy from the 50's to the 70's directing a ton of TV shows such as "The Twilight Zone" and "The Untouchables". Happy Birthday Ida!

I found a 1940's pattern of a similar midriff baring top with matching shorts and skirt. So adorable! I think I may pair mine with some black 1950's capris that have been stored away in my closet, waiting for the perfect top.

Well, who's the best looking lady? I've always thought Jack Lemmon pulls off womanly style the best. From the top is Tony Curtis & Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot, next is The Three Stooges in one of their many girl costumes, then we have Lionel Barrymore as an elderly woman, and finally Bing Crosby in a stunning gown! I know there's more but I can't think of them, so these will have to do for now. I have to say, I love Tony Curtis's travel case!

Not only is this a great movie, but the 1940's clothing is incredible! Bette Davis is stunning in the outfits worn by her characters new improved self. It's no surprise, as the costume designer for this film was the amazing Orry Kelly. There are so many gorgeous wardrobe changes I can't even pick a favorite. I have to say though, I absolutely love her sunglasses in the last photo!

Luise Rainer turned 102 today! Congratulations Luise! She's a German actress who became famous in Hollywood in the 1930's. She didn't make that many films, but out of those few films she won two oscars! One for "The Great Ziegfeld" in 1936 and another for "The Good Earth" in 1937. Luise was not impressed by stardom, and left the Hollywood in the early 1940's. I saw a recent interview with her on TCM and she was just adorable! I wish my grandmothers could have lived to that age!

The Women & The Opposite Sex

I'm not a big fan of vintage films being remade today, but when it's an old remake of an even older movie, well then I'm interested! “The Opposite Sex” was made in 1956 as a remake of the 1939 classic “The Women”. I was really excited to see this film, but other than having a decent cast and some great clothes, it didn't really do it for me. The original was just so glamorous and witty, where I found this remake almost boring at times. Did they really think they could replace Joan Crawford with Joan Collins? Or Norma Shearer with June Allyson? I mean, c'mon, there was really no chance of “The Opposite Sex” even coming close to “The Women”. Anyhow, I thought I would do a little comparison with pictures. Hope you enjoy!

Making my Vintage Hats Fit

I love vintage hats. I just wish there were more available in larger sizes! I have a bunch of 1940's and 1950's hats that are a bit too tight. I really love them, so I didn't want to sell them, so what did I do? I bought a hat stretcher! Who knows if it will actually work, but I figured I would at least give it a shot. So I've got it inside one of my 1940's hats right now, I'm going to leave it for a few days and see what happens. Wish me luck :)

She was known as "the girl with the million dollar legs", as her studio had them insured for one million dollars! I adore vintage luggage. To me it always looks so much classier than new luggage. I posted some pictures of 1950's luggage from vintage catalogs. I find the quality of old travel cases so much better too, which would make sense considering so many have lasted over the years. The only downside I find is that they're a bit heavier than modern luggage. But that doesn't stop me. I just bought a cute little blue travel case this past weekend. It's one of those round cases thats lined inside, and it comes with a cute little mirror. I can't wait to use it!

1960's Fashion on Film - The Misfits

I watched this movie for the first time yesterday, and loved it. It's probably my favorite Marilyn Monroe film now. She's quite different from any other character she's played before, and I would say it's one of her finest performances. The movie has an incredible star studded cast including Clark Gable, Montgomery Cliff, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter, who all make this an amazing film to watch. Anyways, now I will get to the clothes! Marilyns wardrobe is fabulous. The movie was made in 1960, but released in 1961 so there are still 50's influences in the clothing. Taking place in the hot Nevada desert, Marilyn get's to show off some very western and casual style clothing. There's also a little 60's bikini that's only shown for a couple seconds. My favorites though are the gorgeous cherry print halter dress, and the fitted black sheath dress. I also love the veil she wears in her hair in the first picture.

It's funny though, a lot of vintage slippers look like fancy evening shoes today! Most Hollywood stars changed their appearance over time, but then there were some who created their own look. Joan Crawfords exaggerated lips are a prime example. Max Factor helped create this look, and by the 1940's you could see it being imitated all over the place. I posted pics of Joan from the 1920's to the 1960's. Which decade has your favorite Joan look? I personally love her in the 20's and early 30's, with her thin eyebrows and lips. Check out the difference in her eyebrows from the first picture in the late 20's to the last picture from the 60's.

Standing at just 4'11 inches tall and apparently weighing only 90lbs, Veronica Lake must have been the tiniest femme fatale of the 1940's! I think what she was most famous for though was her hairstyle, which was widely imitated. Veronica was born in Brooklyn, New York but later moved with her family to Beverly Hills, which was when she got her start in show business. Fun fact - Veronica got her pilots licence in 1946, and was able to fly by herself between Los Angeles and New York.

Although this film was made in 1960's, the time period of the movie was Edwardian. Wow, and the gowns are just amazing! It's no surprise that it won the oscar that year for best costumes. Audrey Hepburn shines in each and every outfit, showcasing not only stunning dresses, but incredible hats, gloves and jewelry. I just wonder how many of the costumes were authentic Edwardian period garments, and how many were reproduction designs?

Losing Weight in the 1950's

I just love vintage scarves! Scarves in the 1940's were not only pretty to wear, but they were useful too. During WWII, scarves were the perfect accessory for female factory workers. What better way to hold back your hair? My grandmother and her best friend worked in an airplane factory during the war - the top picture I posted is of her friend. Although I don't know if she'd wear that pretty scarf to the factory!

She made her film debut in 1935 and the rest is history. Did you know Vivien was offered the supporting role of Isabella in "Wuthering Heights"? She refused it though, as she only wanted the lead role which had already been given to Merle Oberon. Luckily, not too long after that she landed the lead in "Gone with the Wind", which won her the Oscar that year. Fun fact - Vivien was known for her love of cats, and had many during her lifetime.

I'm so excited it's already November, because that means it's almost winter time, and winter time means I get to bring out my big vintage coats! I have a weakness for faux fur 1960's coats. I don't know what it is about them, but I can't stop buying them. I guess if I think about it, they're soft and warm, they always look stylish, you can wear them with almost anything, and usually one size fits all. I kept writing 1960's for this film because all the dresses look very 60's style! It's hard for me to remember it made in 1956. I guess this movie really did predict the future, at least for fashion! Anne Francis is adorable in this movie, wearing her sparkly mini dresses and futuristic gowns. My ultimate favorite outfit she wears though, is the cute little blue dress with an attached hood shown in the last photo. I want it!

I've been on a bit of a Jean Harlow kick lately! Anyhow, I thought I'd watch China Seas, as I hadn't seen it in awhile. Wow! I'd forgotten how stunning her wardrobe is in this film! I think this movie actually has some of the most gorgeous 1930's dresses and suits I've ever seen her in! It was no surprise when I looked up the costume designer for the film and saw that it was Adrian! No wonder! I posted photos of all the outfits I could find, but there were still more I couldn't find pics of. My favorite outfit is the fully striped dress with matching hat, pictured on the 2nd to last photo. I just wish I knew what colors it was! Did you know Jean Harlow wore a wig for this film, because her hair was so damaged from bleaching? All I have to say about that is, that's one gorgeous wig!

I know summer is over, but I just got a 1950's swimsuit and dress. I thought I would add them to my webstore anyways, because the sun is shining somewhere in the world! I like the 50's pink dress because it's casual but really pretty. The black 1950's bathing suit I love, because these type of swimsuits are so flattering on! I have an almost identical one to this, otherwise I would have kept it. I don't know if it's the boning in these 1950's swimsuits or the ruching, but they make your figure look amazing!

Lately I've been wondering about how women used to carry their cash. This came to my attention since I never seem to come across any vintage wallets. I do come across a lot of little change purses, and I have a few 1950's purses that come with attached coin purses. But wallets did exist, I guess women just held onto them until they wore out, so they're not as common to find now. I posted a 1950's advertisement for some cute his and hers wallets. I suppose without tons of credit cards and plastic, wallets weren't as much of a necessity and change purses did just fine!

The 1930's dresses in this film are pure Hollywood glamour. Then again, how can you not have glamour when Jean Harlow and Myrna Loy are in a film together? This movie displays some amazing 1930's gowns, furs and hats. My favourite is the wedding dress Jean Harlow wears at the beginning of the film. I couldn't find a full length photo of it, but I'm sure you can imagine. A long, creamy bias cut satin gown that looked absolutely stunning on her. I will keep searching for a picture!

Florals seem to be a timeless print for vintage and new dresses, and why shouldn't they be? They're pretty, colorful, feminine and there's endless unique designs. Happy Birthday Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury was born in London, England in 1925. Her family later moved to New York, and then Los Angeles where she started her film career. Did you know that Angela was nominated for an academy award for her very first film role in "Gaslight" in 1944? She was only 18 years old! I guess she chose the right profession. One of my favourite films of hers is "Samson and Delilah", she's so gorgeous, and in my opinion she steals the show from Hedy Lamarr. I think when you mention Angela Lansbury, a lot of people just think of her in the 1980's TV show "Murder She Wrote". So I posted a bunch of photos of her earlier in her career, most of them from the 1940's, and absolutely stunning.

WWII Fashion Regulations

In 1942, The British Board of Trade issued a Civilian Clothing Order forbidding the use of any extra detailing on garments. No fancy trimmings, no decorative stitching, no pleats, and no more than 3 buttons were allowed on a jacket. I posted a photo of a mid 1940's suit that went by these rules. I don't know about you, but decorative details or not, vintage suits always look glamorous to me! When you add on a gorgeous hat, gloves and purse, how drab can you really be?

Vintage Alligator Etiquette

I was doing some reading on vintage alligator shoes and purses, and came upon this article by Genevieve Dariaux. It is from her etiquette book, "A Guide to Elegance" published in 1964, and goes a little something like this:

"I cannot restrain myself from expressing the dismay I feel when I see a woman carry an alligator handbag with a dressy ensemble merely because she has paid an enormous sum of money for it. Alligator is strictly for sports or travel, shoes as well as bags, and this respected reptile should be permitted to retire every evening at 5pm."

That's funny, I would have thought alligator accessories would be worn for dressy occasions, and especially at night. But, no, if you were a proper lady you would only show off your pricey reptile items during the day. I posted the 3rd photo to show what might happen if you were caught carrying your vintage alligator purse at night.

1920's Dress Purchase

So I bought a 1920's dress yesterday! See 2nd photo. It's not in perfect condition and it will need a few repairs, but I got it for a good price. Plus, it will be a fun project to work on. I thought it would look really cute with vintage shawl, maybe a lace or silk one. Now if I could just find some shoes like the ones Clara Bow is wearing in the 1st photo!

Vintage Pinafore and 1950's Dress

Just added these two cute items to my web store. First is a 1940's pinafore dress in a cute novelty print of little houses and flowers. Pretty adorable. Then there's a pretty pink 1950's dress, which looks like it belongs at summer garden party. Still haven't found anything for myself though! I've been on the hunt for a new vintage dress for a few weeks now. I've found tons a gorgeous dresses, but none in my size. I guess the perfect dress will come along at the right time, I know it's out there somewhere!

1960's Fashion on Film - Barefoot in the Park

"Barefoot in the Park" was made in 1967, and stars Jane Fonda and Robert Redford. Jane is adorable in this movie as a free spirited newlywed. I love her character's fashion choices in this film...casual but stylish, and always really cute.

Carole Lombard was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1908. Her parents divorced in 1914, so her mother moved Carole and her brothers to Los Angeles. Carole soon became interested in acting, and made her screen debut in 1921. During the 1930's she became the queen of screwball comedies, and was the highest paid actress of the time. She was married twice, first to William Powell, and then to Clark Gable. Between her marriages, she was known for her wild parties that she hosted at her home on Hollywood Boulevard. However, when she got married to Gable, the two bought a ranch and led a quieter life, raising chickens and horses. Did you know that Carole turned down the lead role in "It Happened One Night", that Claudette Colbert won an oscar for?

Yellow Striped 1950's Dress

Here is the latest addition to my vintage dress section on my website! Sadly it was not my size, so i hope it will find a loving home and be put to good use! I'm not sure if it can technically be called a shirtwaist dress, as it doesn't have a typical shirt collar, but it's cute nonetheless! I always try and find vintage designs of the dresses I have, so this was the closest one I found! It's a 1950's dress pattern. Not an exact match, but similar idea.

1940's Purse Contents

I read an article from 1945 that listed the contents of a typical womans handbag. Here it goes: 1 or 2 lipsticks, a compact, a fresh hankerchief, the laundry bill, 1 nylon stocking, 1 pack of cigarettes, 3 packs of matches, 1 hairnet, an address book, a pack of letters and 1 fountain pen. A little different from today, but we still carry the same amount of items if not more!

Late 1950's Skirts

My latest vintage clothing addition is this gorgeous late 50's red wool skirt! It's nice and fitted with a cute bow like detail in the back. Skirts weren't as long as they were in the early to mid fifties, but I love both styles just the same. I posted a couple pictures of skirt patterns from 1959.

1940's Fashion on Film - Gilda

I love Glen Ford, but this movie is worth watching for Rita Hayworth's costumes alone! Columbia pictures spent $60,000 on Ritas wardrobe for "Gilda", which in todays world would be close to a million dollars. So you can bet on some amazing 1940's dresses. There are so many costume changes in film, I couln't find pictures of them all, but here are a few of my favorites.

Continuing on my accessory theme, I just added a bunch of pretty vintage gloves to my website! They all look like they've hardly been worn, and will add that vintage touch to whatever you're wearing. Speaking for myself, I found a pair of navy 1950's gloves to wear to a wedding I'll be attending next weekend. They match perfectly with the navy blue 1940's dress I'll be wearing. I'm still searching for a matching hat and jewelry though!

1940's Dresses and Accessories

After looking at these pictures of 1940's fashion, I realized that the accessories are what makes the outfit. Without the hats, gloves, furs and jewelry almost all the glamour is gone. Of course this is probably obvious to most, but I've never been a big accessorizer - especially when I should be, like when wearing a nice vintage dress. So, I've decided to put in some effort, for the sake of vintage fashion. I have a wedding to go to in about 2 weeks. I plan on wearing a long 1940's gown, and usually that would be it. But I'm going to see what I can find. Hopefully at least some vintage gloves and jewelry!

Yesterday morning I went out to get a prescription filled for my husband. Luckily for me, the pharmacy is only 3 blocks away. But even luckier is that there's a vintage clothing store right across from it. So while I was waiting for the prescription I thought I would do some window shopping at the vintage store. I hadn't planned on buying anything, until I saw this gorgeous vintage bracelet. I had a very similar 1950's bracelet that broke last month, so it was perfect timing!

Greta Garbo was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1905. She started off as a soap lathering girl in a barbershop before getting into acting, and moving to Hollywood in 1925. Despite becoming one of the worlds most successful film stars, Greta was a bit of a loner and avoided publicity, interviews and fans. She never got married, had no children and lived alone. The glamorous and iconic actress retired at the young age of 36.

It's like wearing a long wool tank top - comfy until you get into the water, and then it becomes 10x as heavy! I finally added some vintage jewelry onto my website! So far it's mostly 1950's earrings, but there is a 1960's pair as well some art deco ones. I hope to be adding lots more in the near future - hopefully some necklaces & brooches. And if I ever find my huge box of costume jewelry from my grandmother, I will have lots more goodies to show off!

Claudette Colbert was born in Saint-Mande, France in 1903. Her family later moved to New York where she got her start on Broadway and then film. Claudette became one of the most successful actresses of the 1930's, and was best known for her screwball comedies. A few interesting facts about Claudette: Once she became really famous, she refused to be filmed from her right side. She thought the left side of her face was her only "good side". Also, the role played by Bette Davis in "All About Eve" was originally written for Claudette. Sadly Claudette wasn't able to go through with the film due to an injury. Lucky for Bette.

Vintage Dress Deja Vu

I watched the movie "The Shining Hour" last night starring Joan Crawford. It was made in 1938. Near the beginning of the film she wears a dress that reminds me of the gold one Marilyn Monroe wears in the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", which was made in 1953. I wonder if the dress designer was inspired by Joan's 1930's dress? I also just found out that Gentlement Prefer Blondes was actually first made as a silent film in 1928! I would love to see it! It stars Alice White and Ruth Taylor in the roles later played by Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe. Sadly the film was lost, but you can see from the photographs this movie had some great 1920's dresses!

1950's Dress by Alfred Shaheen

This is definitely my favorite 50's dress in my store right now. I just wish it fit me so I wouldn't have to sell it! I just love vintage Hawaiian dresses, and the fact that it's an Alfred Shaheen makes it 100 times better. It's in perfect condition too! The only flaw is that it's missing its detachable straps. But it looks great strapless so I suppose its forgivable. Now, if I could only find one in my size!

1930's Fashion on Film - Three on a Match

If you want to see some great 1930's clothing, accessories and actresses, you should definitely check out this film. "Three on a Match" has it all, including Bette Davis, Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak and Humphrey Bogart. Not only does this pre-code movie have drugs, scandal and drama, but it's got some great 1930's hats!

1960's Swimsuit, Hawaiian Style

I watched the 1960's Elvis film Blue Hawaii not too long ago. I think I enjoyed the music in this movie better than the movie itself. But anyhow, I noticed one of the girls in the film is wearing a 1960's bathing suit very similar to one that I have on my website! The major difference is that hers is yellow and mine is red. It's so cute. Speaking of cute, check out those red shorts the girl on the far right is wearing! As for Elvis's dance move on that picture, it's up for questioning...

Dress Changes in the 1920's

Wow, what a difference 7 years makes! In the 1920's dresses started off a bit above the ankle, but by the end of the decade they were less fitted and a lot shorter. Look at all that leg! The first photo is from 1920, and the second one is from 1927. Can you imagine if the ladies in 1920 saw what they'd be wearing in 1927? Gasp! Oh my.

My sister is getting married in 2 weeks, so I've started thinking about vintage wedding dresses again. Unfortunately she doesn't share my love for vintage clothing, so she'll be wearing a modern wedding gown. I wore a satin 1930's gown for my wedding 2 years ago, but if I had to do it again I think I might go for a 1920's or 1940's dress. I posted some photos of vintage wedding dresses from the 1920's to the 1960's. There are such drastic changes from decade to decade, but I think I love them all! Can you guess who each bride or "movie" bride is? From the top is Vilma Banky in 1925, Claudette Colbert in 1934, Rita Hayworth in 1941, Jackie Kennedy in 1953, and Sharon Tate in 1968. 1960's Fashion on Film - The Courtship of Eddie's Father

Everytime I watch this movie, I think, these are the clothes I would wear if it was the 60's now. All three ladies have a great sense of fashion, kind of a sophisticated practical glamour. It's no surprise Helen Rose was the fabulous costume designer for this film. I posted my favorite outfit each of the leading ladies wears in the movie. I love Stella Stevens style in the bowling scene. She looks cuter than ever, but also sexy in a tight white sweater and an orange curve hugging skirt. Then there's Dina Merrill in an elegant 1960's coat with a fur collar, matching hat and gloves of course. Finally we have Shirley Jones in an absolutely gorgeous green 1960's dress. Actually I added one extra pic of Shirley in a cute yellow brocade dress, but this photo was really added because I love the fake fruit stand to the left of her! Where can I get one of those?
